Do More Than Teaching with a Degree on Education

This is a question that almost any teacher would be asking to know. But for many, teaching remains the only option. And that is actually not so essential to be like that. 

It is true that teaching is a great job and one should not like to change or stop it unless the situation becomes financially unavoidable. In that case also teachers can take up some options that will supplement their financials keeping the teaching beside it. 

What can be such full-time or part-time job options which can be suitable for a teacher? 

About Degrees and Qualifications

As I have discussed in one of my articles, degrees are good for the purpose of teaching but again it is not absolutely mandatory in case one has enough domain expertise and teaching experience. 

But if a teacher wants to find an alternate or supplementary job then in some cases the requirement of qualifications get important. Beside domain qualifications a bachelor or masters in education itself can become very beneficial. Still in this article I would focus mainly on those options which can be done both with good number of qualifications as well as with not so good number of qualifications both in the domain subject and the teaching. 

As a Content Writer

Any teacher can write contents of his domain subject. Teachers are usually accustomed to writing because they keep doing that for their students when they answer their questions or questions behind a chapter. 

Teachers often write notes for students. Often need to make presentations for students. So content creation lies well within the domain of teaching. And every piece of content usually need not contain very original or creative materials. Same applies to many internet as well as paper-based publications. Many websites require academic content. Also many educational institutions and tutorials require academic content regularly. Many publications also search contents for their books, note books and suggestions, etc. 

A teacher with writing aptitude can search and find such content writing jobs. On the internet and on social media, information on content writing assignments are often available. Academic content is usually one of the well-paid writing sectors. So teachers who will avail these opportunities can earn either a handsome part time income or a scaling full time income according to his or her requirements. 

Blogging and Online Content 

Above was about writing content for some other person or organization. Here now I will say a few words on writing for self. 

Well you may be wondering about what can be the meaning of writing for self and how it can differ from writing for others. After whatever we write, we have to write for someone else and not for ourselves because it is that someone else who will ultimately pay for the writing. 

Writing for self is retaining the authorship. When you write content for others then usually the authorship also goes to them and you only get money for writing. The obvious disadvantage of this method is you never get the recognition of an author. If one writes quite well then being able to retain the authorship can transform into much bigger success and money in future. 

But as in most cases, the assignment of content writing comes with the condition of transfer of authorship from the author to the buyer. So where can a person find the scope or opportunity to write and also retain the authorship? 

Such a scope is blogging. If you are very serious about writing articles regularly both high in quantity and quality then having your own blog website becomes more than essential, perhaps mandatory. You can reach your audience all around the world by minimum expenses and obstacles. 

There are many blogging websites and they allow you to create a free account where you can write your blog articles. If you do this consistently then you can become identified as a blogger. But there is a problem with this method. The scope of earning money is very limited in this method. This method can fetch you some content writing assignment, but that again will mostly come with the option of giving away the authorship. 

But if you are too serious about writing and blogging, and you are confident in your writings, then the best option will be to create your own website. In a free blogging site, the writing and presentation usually are under many constraints. You can easily overcome that by writing on your website. And if you can write much more stuff whose quality and features can easily surpass that of the blogs then having your own website becomes almost mandatory. 

If you are writing in your own website then you must be writing high quality articles by content, and parallely you can also avail the free blogging website to increase your online marketing scopes. In this way, it will open multiple ways to monetize your talents and skills. One way will be Google who will be paying you on the basis of your traffic. There can be direct sponsors and advertising campaigns also. Then can also happen influencer marketing. After writing for some time you will become a known figure within the relevant communities. This will make you establish a kind of influence on the online people and community and this can become a great earner for you. 

Beside many other such options, perhaps the most important is converting into a domain specialist or a highly resourced person in your subject of interest. Once you succeed, you will start to have maximum opportunities that your subject of interest can give. Even your teaching options will also increase. So this job will leverage maximum benefit both if you want to remain a teacher and also if you don’t want to remain. 

Open an Online Course

This seems like the same as teaching but it is totally a different genre and approach. The most important difference as well as benefit of this type of teaching and traditional type of teaching is in the feature that with this you can even earn while you sleep. Perhaps no other options of teaching can give you this level of freedom from daily teaching or tutoring. 

Online courses can be text based, or only audio or preferably audiovisuals. Many advanced formats of online courses use all the mediums starting from text based course materials to audiovisual classes. Those audiovisuals are also usually prerecorded. 

There are available many Learning Management System(LMS) software which can integrate text materials as well as audiovisual content and even more. You can design and take assessments by their inbuilt test engine features. All these are usually preloaded and prerecorded and hence, if you can write, record and design them once then that will generate a continuous revenue even if you are no more engaged with the day to day process.

The only thing you may need to do daily is following the analytics report and other reports on the performance of the software system as well as the student. Occasionally you can exercise your options to take live sessions and webinars with your students. That will boost the confidence and performance of your participant students. 

As a subject expert, it is expected that you can write suitable course materials as well as record great audiovisuals for your students. And you may also need to load some questions and their solutions in the database of the test engine of LMS. Rest it will take care all by itself. You will be sleeping and your LMS will be working for you and making money for you. 

Become an Online Home Tutor

This is another good alternative to online courses. And this requires much less tech savviness and even less domain knowledge especially if you are to teach not so senior classes. Home tutors of this type are almost just like any normal in-person home tutor work, the only major difference is this one is online and the other one is in-person face-to-face. Both have their own sets of pros and cons. 

Being online tutoring, there will arise infrastructure requirements like computers or smartphones, hi-speed internet connection, teaching or video conferencing software or apps and so on. And with that you have to be savvy enough to use all these properly. But compared to online courses, this one is simple and easy. 

In the situation of Covid-19 pandemic, many parents and guardians are more worried about in-person home tutor, as their child can get an infection. Over that there are frequent federal lockdowns. Hence already the demand for online home tutor is not much less. So this is the best time to launch any digital tutoring option. 

You can Also Become a Corporate Trainer

It Sounds very astronomical but it can happen. It happened to many. And it needs a lot of subject or domain knowledge. This is where the challenge lies. Not all subjects are very compatible with exactly this career option. Still many subject works. Almost all STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), medical subjects, accounts, economics and business management subjects, and many more can support this kind of career option. Even knowledge of languages like English or any foreign language can become applicable in many corporate training modules like business communication and international relations. 

These are usually extremely high paid jobs compared to teaching and home tutoring. So once any teacher can get his feet wet in such an industry profile they usually lose the appetite and interest of teaching and private tuition. That is very natural and obvious. And the time constraints of a corporate trainer are also higher than many professions. Still it can always be a very good option to carry on teaching or tutoring at least at a minimum scale.
