But why did we launch a whole new section on parenting? This is a question that most of you may ask. The answer is not too difficult. KridhaTutor an education company. And here we work with people. People who are students, who are parents and who are teachers. And our focus is on students and their wellbeing as well as education. And the well-being of a student depends on his or her parents. So we are discussing parenting over here.
We understand that if we can make the parents a little more aware, a little more informed and perhaps a little more knowledgeable, then the ultimate benefactors will be their children, and eventually those children are our focus, our students. So this content section on parenting is our humble contribution to the wellbeing of our students.
We are starting with winter. Because it is already winter. Often parents have to spend worrying as toddlers remain so vulnerable this season. Every season has its own pros and cons. So does winter. And parents need to take special care of their kids in winter.
Kids always have habits to spend time outdoors, even at the hours they should not. They like to play with fellow kids. And as a parent you cannot always prevent them and keep them indoor. You have to let them go. But still you can do a lot to keep him warm and safe even in the chilling winter evening in case they play for a little lengthy session.
Catching cold and getting sick in winter can be as easy as in monsoon. So there is less scope for any relaxation. You must have been very meticulously monitoring your kid in the monsoon that just passed away. You know he or she can be wet and sick anytime anyway. Need to go with the same in winter as well.
Childs are especially prone to cough and cold in winter. Same happens in the monsoon too but there is a small difference. Winter tends to be drier and more polluted than monsoon. That can become a great source of concern for anyone and toddlers are especially vulnerable.
With decreasing air moisture content aerial dust pollution increases to a great extent. Due to dryness and pollution this time is a high time for some kinds of allergies, like that of the skin and respiratory organs. So respiratory and skin health becomes priority for kids beside all other regular protections and precautions.
Protections and precautions can be divided into some general and broader categories like dressings, foodings, skincare, daily chores and routines, and so on. Beside these, some kids may need some extra if they have some special problems or issues with winter.
Dressings for a child is a very important issue. Many diseases can be welcomed due to poor dressings whereas many common diseases also can be prevented to a considerable extent by good and intelligent dressings.
Dress, like food, is a thing of personal preference, where even kids can express their mind and personality through it. Still, that personal preference space also should have a certain limit and a certain guidelines. Otherwise anyone including a toddler or kid can fall very sick. And I suppose as a parent, you or anybody will never like or want to welcome such a thing even unknowingly.
Winter dresses for all carry less space for personal customization. The season and the temperature are the prime guide and often decisive for the dress code guidelines in these months. And whatever the fashion factor can be, afterall you cannot let your kid remain without a proper winter dressing.
Many people think winter dressings begin with the jacket. It’s true that the jacket is an important part. But there are a lot more. Layering of dresses in winter makes an important step to protect your kid from the cold. And layering has to be done little wisely. It starts from the innermost dress that he or she would be wearing.
The innermost dress in winter is a little tricky. Especially for active toddlers, the choice has to be appropriate. They are active enough to sweat every now and then even in winter, under their layer dresses. And if the innermost layer is of cotton then it can get wet to retain the wetness for an extended period of time. That can be harmful for the child. There can be cough and cold infections as well as associated skin related problems. So the choice should be something that can absorb the moisture from the skin as well as get dry soon and do not retain the wetness. A synthetic sports fabric can be a good choice as they usually drain all the moisture instead of retaining.
On the inner layer, the other layers are to be done according to the winter temperature. If the temperature is moderately low, then a second layer of sweater can even do well. Sweaters are available in varied thickness depending upon the quality and price. Usually thicker sweaters will insulate your child more than the thin ones.
But if the cold is biting, then only one sweater over the inner layer will not be sufficient. You may need at least one more layer. And that can be better with a jacket or windcheater. Windcheaters are not going to work well in too much of a cold. But jackets are available of various thickness and quality. There are jackets which can even shield one from the Siberean cold. But usually you would not need such a one. A moderate one will do well. Moreover a jacket can become one important element of your kids’ fashion factor or style statement.
This was about the upper. The lower is equally important. Lowers are usually single layered unless you are somewhere near the mountains and hills or equally cold places. But that single lower can be either made of thick cotton, jeans materials or even can be woolen. If the temperature is too low then a woolen one will be a better choice.
There is another category of dress usually known by the name of ‘thermals’. Usually these are among one’s inner layers. Thermals are available both for upper and lower. Upper thermals are more common than the lower ones. In moderate to intense winter cold, wearing an inner thermal even below the first layer or maybe just over the first layer can provide very good insulation for your child.
As I said, lower thermals are less common and are usually not required. But if the temperature is too low, then it will be wise to make your kid wear the lower thermal also. Thermals are usually made of such materials that can drain the sweat moisture more easily and keep dry.
Then comes the cap. A cap is a good dress element, especially in winter. In moderate winters or more, kids may need to wear a cap to protect their head from cold. Head and face are the two very important parts to protect especially in winter as both of them are vulnerable to cold related diseases. Thus proper capping of the head is a good habit for toddlers in the winter. Again cap material can play an important factor. Caps are available in materials like cotton, jeans or synthetic. Cotton can be comfortable all around the year except winter, when a woolen one can be better.
One more thing is important about the cap. Some caps come with ear protections as well whereas others may not. Though it is not always necessary to make the children wear the with-ear versions, but when it will be too much cold, or when they will roam out of the home or room, then the cold air can get into their ear which can become a source of disease like cough and cold or throat infections, etc.
Next is socks and shoes. Toddlers are usually very active and do not like to sit in one place. They will move about. And if they wear no shoes and socks then those feet can be a source of cold to make them sick. Wearing only socks is usually not advisable because it can get wet somehow and that can be very harmful for the child. So even when at home, wearing a shoe for home use together with socks is the best choice for children.
Gloves, muffler, etc. are not usually necessary if the toddler is not sick or not in some outdoor activities like riding on a vehicle, roaming or touring, and so on.
With this idea on layering of winter garments one more thing has to be borne in mind perfectly. And that is we have to avoid heating the body due to excess winter garments. Too much layering or too thick layering of garments can make the child overheat inside which can be harmful to the child. The garments should be in balance and alignment with the external temperature of the room or environment in which the toddler will be spending time. Proper thermal balance in dressing is very essential for good health and winter wellbeing.
Food is very important for the winter health of the toddlers. Many of you will be astonished that food is an even more important factor than dressings for winter wellness of toddlers. And not only toddlers, food is more important for all of us also. Proper food would work up to much to keep your toddler happy and healthy, whereas deficiency of the same can lead to many kinds of diseases including low immunity infections like cough and cold, influenza or other viral infections.
