Why Foreign Language Still Important for Students

India’s connections with foreign countries are deep and wide, diplomatically, economically and culturally. That makes the requirements and relevance of foreign language as a career booster higher than ever.

It is true that studying a foreign language alone cannot make a whole career for too many students as there are usually very few such opportunities or openings. Except for a few jobs as translators and prompts, there are not many jobs in foreign languages.

But as a support to any professional qualification and job, the relevancy of foreign language is quite high and we can expect it to be higher. But why so? Let us see that below.

Suppose one is in the IT sector as a developer or maybe project manager. They work for different clients or customers, and hence often need to communicate with them in their comfortable language. Though globally English is a well-established language option that we also have in our school and college studies curriculum. But in many cases the other end of the communication may not have got his English too strong as a result there will often arise a major gap of communication. That is never a good idea for any ongoing project works.

Beside the English speaking countries, our IT sector gets many different types of clients and markets from European and South Asians countries. And it is very much possible that the customer has European or any other language as their communication tool. In such cases, employees who are comfortable with those languages naturally become an asset of the employer organization.

Students who are aspiring for working in corporates and MNCs usually follow either of the two tracks of studies, one in engineering and technology and the other in management. The engineering graduates end up with qualifications as BTech, BE, MTech and ME (for who all continue till their masters) and the management graduates get their qualifications as BBA and MBA.

These qualifications are considered as base qualifications for a general entry in the corporate world. But that does not mean that students cannot or should not or even need not have any other qualifications. There are nowadays a lot of supportive qualifications for both the category of students. And additional qualifications on foreign languages are highly expected to carry immense value in the professional life of the students.

There are also a lot of students who cannot pursue those professional qualifications of engineering or management and still need a good job in MNCs, corporates or government sectors. For non-engineering and non-management students it becomes quite hard to get into the corporate or MNC sectors as the options are very limited. But an additional qualification on some foreign languages, especially one or two European languages can make the path easier and wider.

In government sectors also, there are indeed a lot of scopes for all general graduates. But usually there is a huge amount of competition because nowadays everyone wants to have a government job. Thus overcoming the competition does not become everyone’s cup of tea. But there still opens an alternative for some sectors of government such as foreign and trade departments. There they need to deal with many different countries and they often require people for translations and communications.

Even schools and colleges also have high demand of foreign language teachers. Nowadays, many premium schools and colleges have foreign language as their subjects. The counts are increasing day by day. So you can understand that there will be an increasing requirement of teachers for those languages. Thus it will create another prospective employment opening for all foreign language students.

As foreign languages are getting popular and as more and more schools and colleges are adopting them as their compulsory syllabus inclusion, there will be a surge in the requirement of home tutors and tutorials of different foreign languages. This will become another great opportunity for many foreign language students who would like to become teachers. The remuneration of a foreign language teachers can also be expected to be higher than any local language teacher.

Thus we can see that studies on foreign languages can widen the scope to many professional careers or open up many self-employment and job opportunities. So whatever the subject of pursuit of the student, it will always be advisable to learn one or a few foreign languages as per convenience and choice (the choice of which foreign language to learn is another very vital question that every aspiring foreign language student must ask and know).

I will discuss the choice of foreign language later in this article. Many people learn one or two foreign languages just out of their likings and are not very aware or concerned about the job and economic prospects of those languages. On one hand this approach can be good and ok for any individual because he exercised his right to choose according to their preference. But on the other hand when we are particularly concerned about the resultant economic and job prospects then certain foreign languages most obviously enjoy a much better position than many others in the list. So there the issue of the choice of the student becomes relevant and vital.

Before choosing any foreign language for studies, one student must at first make it sure that he or she is concerned and aware of the economic and job prospects of that particular language. For that a lot of information collection and research work is needed both in the online as well as offline channels. That will help to create a kind of insight on the different languages of so many different regions and nations of this world and their extent and sectors of applications. A choice of foreign language for studies done by proper research has greater chances for providing better professional opportunities and thus economic benefits.

By now I suppose you are convinced enough about the purpose and benefits of having one or more foreign language skills in your biodata. There are some sort of even more benefits of learning foreign languages, and that I will discuss a bit at almost the end of this writeup. Now let us see some information that can help any student or anyone who wants to learn any foreign language to make a better choice of which languages are to be learnt.

In this section we will find out and ascertain the right choice of foreign language(s) for any student under the condition that the student is serious about using his or foreign language skills for professional benefits.

As I mentioned above, many people learn foreign languages just for some casual plans and usually there are good chances of it not to create significant professional benefits out of it. But others are more motivated to learn and also use their skill for professional and monetization purposes. If you want to keep both ends, then you really need a lot of information about the market and societal prospects and purposes of both the choices and before actually and really making the choices.

We here are more concerned about the 2nd category case of the above two cases. I am writing this article for those students who are aspiring to learn a language to use in his or her profession (and also preferably have a liking for that language). It is not possible to discuss which language one would like to learn, but the question on which language carries more professional value becomes very relevant to our article here.  So let me discuss a few of the world’s highest learnt as well as used languages.

  2. German
