After 2020 not being tech savvy does not remain as a choice for teachers and students anymore. The pandemic and the resulting lockdown showed that sometimes there would remain no other options open for performing even a basic and fundamental human activity like education without depending on technology. Though this is not an appropriate pre-condition for something as fundamental as human education, or ideally should ever be, still sometimes technology will get over education.
Considering the reality, both teachers and students have to equip themselves with all sorts of technologies that would in one way or another aid the process of education. And when the question comes to coaching tutors, then the roles of technology can get even wider. Why so?
Though a school teacher almost resembles the coaching tutor in the way they both instruct multiple students simultaneously in their classes. Still there remains a difference. The coaching tutor lies somewhere in the middle point of a school teacher and a home tutor.
The home tutor usually teaches only one student at a time but has to provide more individual level customized tutoring to the students. School teachers on the other hand teach many students at a time and concentrate more on the subject of the education than the learners. Their teaching is more generic in nature and usually does not provide too much focus on the students by individual customization.
But the coaching tutor needs to do both at least at a considerable level. It is essentially more tough and challenging than the other two variants. On one hand they need to focus on the subject matter and provide quality generic level classes to his students. On the other hand they are also expected to provide individual level customization for the learning processes in their class. A typical coaching class can have at least 10 or more students at a time.
So we can imagine how challenging the task of being an appropriate coaching tutor can become. There are many proven principles and methods in our education theories to deal with these kinds of complex situations. And many teachers do g handle all these quite efficiently and satisfactorily.
Technology can make things easier for those coaching tutors. It will allow them to deliver an even higher quality of education despite all the associated problems and challenges. Moreover if situations like the Covid pandemic or something like that comes on the way, then dealing with that and continuing with the teaching and learning will become possible by using technology.
Teachers, students and parents keep hearing that more and more technologies are supporting the education processes. Thus arose a separate dedicated branch of technology known as the ‘Edtech’ or the ‘Education-Technology’.
So what is this Edtech is all about?
This is a short definition for the word Edtech as appears in the Google Search Page. Any technology that supports the process of education, inside or outside the classroom can be called as Education Technology or EdTech.
We have been using technologies in our classroom since almost ancient times. Books, pens, papers and blackboards are the most prominent examples of such technologies. We never gave it a thought because these things appear so obvious to us. Still they are pieces of technology and also each of them are products of technology and not naturally available. These were some primitive examples of use of technology and its products for the purpose of education.
With passing time and developing frontiers of Science and Technology, the penetration of more advanced devices and gadgets became inevitable in the world of education.
Blackboard turned to white and chalks to markers. Obviously that requires more writing technology to provide more writing precision and comfort.
Then came the overhead projectors, which ultimately evolved to the digital versions with progress in the areas of personal computers.
These were examples from the classroom. But technology has no compulsion to remain confined within just the classroom. Thus it gave laboratories to students and teachers.
Today every school, college and university has more than one well equipped laboratories on various subjects in which doing some practical experiments provides better understanding and learning.
The horizons are ever expanding and we are experiencing an era of computers, internet, advanced programs and softwares, all contributing and enhancing the education and learning experiences.
And as another example can we consider even a naive spectacle as a piece of technology which we can call an EdTech? Because it can make the journey of education and learning easier for millions or billions of visually impaired students and teachers.
It would be better to ask why we should not need it?
Let us first have a look at the purpose of technology in human life.
Technology is a human innovation product derived from the knowledge gained from the studies in fundamental Sciences.
The purpose of technology is progressive, in all possible areas of human endeavor, to enhance the value of human existence and increase the probability of survivability, and ultimately to help gain more knowledge of Nature and beyond.
Thus technology builds up from the knowledge of fundamental Sciences and conversely technology helps us to harness more knowledge of fundamental Sciences out of the Nature around us. The relationship is kind of symbiotic.
Thus we can see technology has a mandatory role to play in acquisition and assimilation of human knowledge in a very large perspective. In a similar track, technology can play an immense role in all educational processes at all the stages of human resource development.
Our education system, where we teach and train our children to make them equipped and ready for the days of their life, technology can play a 360° role if we can use it properly. It is within the core mandate behind the creation of technology among human beings.
Thus there remains no reason to think or believe that technology cannot play a substantial role in human resource development. Just we need to figure out the right and ethical ways to use the technology so that our purpose of human development remains at the forefront.
Use of technology in education can make things easier and faster. Human lifespan is too short in respect to the surrounding Natural elements. We usually need to do or achieve quite a lot compared to the time we get.
Already one third of our short life ideally goes to sleep. If the average survivability is somewhere around 60 years then around 20 years goes in sleep. In the remaining 40 years one needs to do everything. Out of that 40 years more than 20 years are spent in fundamental education. So what are we left with?
Hence it is important that we can use each of our year extremely intelligently and turn it productive. The first 20 years are our building block and hence perhaps the most important part in our life. It defines our existence in this world.
The more we can make out of that first 20 years, the more we can produce in our next 20 years. That’s the basic rule of thumb. And most of our first 20 years are spent in school, colleges and coaching centers. And it can turn out a great advantage in one’s lifespan if he can make the most out of these days of school and coaching centers. And exactly at this point of motive technology can play an amazing role.
Just one example I will cite for the purpose and I believe that will be perfect to explain my point, as we do not have the scope to discuss every application over here in this blog.
Once a student needed to run from one corner of a city to another to search for information in libraries. Schools do have libraries usually but often not enough for all purposes. So much time and effort was spent on the purpose. Time and effort of human beings are too precious things to waste, we should learn to conserve and use them in the proper directions.
With the development of computer and internet technologies came search engines which can give quite a lot of information at the cost of minimum time and effort anytime we need. Now for only more advanced requirements of knowledge and information we need to go for libraries. Libraries also slowly evolved in the digital mode to make things even easier and faster.
Obviously there are downsides as well. The value of time and effort can be given by only those who actually understand the value of human time and effort. If the time students save by accessing information digitally is spent in futile purposes then the very purpose of technological development and its delegation in the education system goes into vain. Because it is no longer working for human resource development.
By now we are discussing the need of being tech savvy for the teachers. And we are convinced that contemporary teachers obviously need to be tech savvy.
But how can teachers become tech savvy? Somewhere it has to start. No one is tech savvy from the beginning.
Nowadays most schools have the resources for making students tech savvy. Computer laboratories and studies, online classes by phone or computer, and computer based studies are becoming common in the schools.
But before sometime all these were not there in any standard school studies. Teachers who were students then had minimum exposure to the different educational technologies.
So teachers are supposed to have an urge to cover up this shortcoming if they want to remain contemporary and relevant in the current education scenario.
To cover up these, teachers have the choice to join a computer training program near their locality. Owing to the popularity of computers and the internet, there are so many training centers all around.
Teachers need to find and choose the right course and the right training institute for their individual requirements and suitabilities. Now there are plenty of online courses, both free and paid. Some courses are part-time and some are full time.
If the teacher is too busy with other schedules then he can go for a part-time course. Otherwise it will be better to opt for a full time one. Full time courses are usually more exhaustive and often are finished in smaller duration than part time.
I would recommend a paid course. Though there are many free courses available at high quality, but it would take an expert view to choose an effective free course. If it is from some renowned organization or teacher then that can be opted for.
Anyway anyone can check a free course as a demo and find out how the progress is going on. Paid courses from renowned sources usually have less to worry about.
Free or premium, a course should come with some evaluation facilities also. If a novice cannot measure his or her progress then true confidence on the subject can be hard to build.
Other than online and offline courses there are many learning resources all around the Internet. We can find relevant materials in different websites and Youtube videos.
But such resources are usually very unarranged. Anybody and especially beginners can face a lot of trouble with that. Moreover not all such resources are of the same quality.
All teachers would need to take help from technology more in the coming days. Coaching tutors would need it even more than ever.
Coaching tutors have to teach multiple students in a single class like that in a school classroom. And also they will need to take more individual level care than school teachers and as far as like the home tutors. Thus the task of coaching tutors is quite complex and tough.
With the help of technology things can get a little easier and feasible for the coaching tutors. There are so many education related digital resources all around.
Coaching tutors can use computers, and the Internet to prepare valuable study materials for the benefit of the students. When a class has multiple students then a well prepared study material can help the teacher to reach his students better and faster.
High quality study materials with ample diagrams and illustrations, can be made by using the computer and digital document preparation tools. Even the teacher can take the option of creating animated and audio visual materials.
Digital documents are easy to present and distribute to a classful of students. If the class can be equipped with a digital projector then the quality of class presentation can reach a different level. Otherwise even a computer monitor can serve the purpose well.
Use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) can make student management easy for assignments, projects, evaluations, etc. Softwares and apps on digital interaction and social media can make interactions easier and faster.
Now is the age of online classes. Giving online classes to a group of students is a very possible thing nowadays. Many coaching teachers may prefer hybrid class options as well. There he may take a few classes offline and a few classes online. Some coaching runs in the online mode only.
Whatever be the setup and application, technology is serving a lot of valuable purposes in the world of education. And the coaching education system is no exception.
Hence the technological aptitude of a coaching teacher can be of great advantage for the students, the teacher and the coaching center as whole.
